A constructive day

What a day.

Today was a great day. I enjoyed it so much and got to learn many things. It started for me with the conference “Chasing perfect” of Frank Stephenson a Design director and iconic car designer. I would have never thought that this could have been so interesting. Frank being an iconic car designer and me actually being a car fanatic created a great combo and environment to listen to. It being the first conference also made it a little easier to stay focused if you know what I mean. His way to approach problems is so great. He told us a story of how he designed the new Mini Cooper. But forgot to put an important part of the car in the design. What he did to fix it shocked me. Such a brilliant and funny idea that made a great outcome. It proved to me that even when you have a big problem you do not always need a big and difficult solution. Simplicity can also create a great looking result. I could say he opened my eyes to it and it’s such a great way to take problems head-on. I did not list him as one of the speakers I wanted to listen to but I sure am happy to have listened to what he had to say. But my day did not stop there. It got even more interesting I could say.

The real fun.

I followed up the first conference with “Comic books & Innovation” by Ken Lashley. This is the moment where the real fun started. Since the beginning of the convention, this was by far the best speaker yet. Mr. Lashley is a comic designer for marvel and he is really doing a great job. He talked about standing up for yourself in such an inspiring way. Ken said something that was a very interesting way to work. If a company tells you what they want, give them what they want and follow that up with what you wanted to do and let them choose. This is the way he goes to work he sends five designs of what the company asked and then also gives them two designs he thinks are cool. He said after that they always also used the designs he thought were cool. And this proves that you should stand up for yourself and do what you like too. During this conference, a funny thing happened. My friend and co-student got projected on the screen during the conference wearing her spidermen costume. It made me laugh so hard, I think that it was such a great aspect of the conference. And I obviously took a photo of it as you can see here.

I could say so much more about the other conferences I followed today. But I think the two conferences I already talked about were certainly the highlights of my day. Ending the day I followed a little cocktail workshop. Being a barman as a job student made it very interesting and it was a great way to end the day. So overall I really had a great day!
